From One-Off Workshops to Sustainable Professional Learning:
Reimagining Continuing Professional Development for University Lecturers in Kenya
University lecturers are increasingly expected to adopt learner-centred teaching approaches, innovative assessment practices, digital technologies and artificial intelligence (AI), while ensuring inclusive and research-informed learning experiences. Meeting these expectations requires continuous professional development (CPD) that goes beyond attending occasional workshops and training programmes. This paper examines how CPD in Kenyan universities can be strengthened to support lecturers’ professional growth and improve the quality of teaching and learning. Drawing on a critical review of Kenyan empirical studies, higher education policy documents, international research and theories of adult and workplace learning, the paper explores existing professional development practices, emerging competency needs and challenges affecting their effectiveness. The discussion is informed by andragogy, reflective practice, communities of practice, technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) and approaches to evaluating professional development. The proposed framework offers a practical foundation for strengthening professional development in Kenyan universities, while providing opportunities for further research and institutional adaptation.
